Myth and the Sea

Nereo is the first drawing created for the book “Il Mito e il Mare”, by Federico Betti, who tells the origins of marine species names deriving from Greek mythology.

Nereo, father of the beautiful Nereids, is the “Old man of the sea”, represented with seaweed hair, beard, and eyebrows. His name recalls the Nereis genus, which includes several species of polychaete worms.
